Sports Illustrated writer to speak at Reese Tip-Off Memorial




Sports Illustrated senior writer Gary Smith will be the guest speaker at the second annual Perry Reese Jr. Tip-Off Memorial to be held at the Amish Door Restaurant on Saturday, Nov. 23. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Perry Reese Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit Hiland graduates.

Smith is the author of the Sports Illustrated article "Higher Education" which was written about Reese.

Smith grew up in a family of nine children in Wilmington, DE. He is a graduate of La Salle University in Philadelphia. He has worked for Sports Illustrated for the past 20 years. He has also written for Esquire, Rolling Stone, Life and the Washington Post Magazine.

He received three National Magazine Awards for feature writing and an anthology of his short stories has been published in a book called "Beyond the Game." Smith lives in Charleston, SC, with his wife and three children.
