No beauty, just a win as Hiland tops Garaway

BERLIN — Hiland may have come away with a 46-33 triumph over the visiting Garaway Pirates Wednesday at the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center, but it was a game that left venerable Hawks coach Dave Schlabach seeing red.

"My eyes are bleeding from that game. I can't even see straight," Schlabach said. "It was ugly. I thought we played terribly. We took bad shots, didn't show any kind of skill level whatsoever. We're a young team that didn't respect Garaway enough to be ready to play. That was an ugly one."

A quartet of Hiland players connected on first-quarter 3-pointers, helping the Hawks build a 15-2 lead. Garaway, meanwhile, had trouble finding its range in managing only one field goal in the opening eight minutes.

Morgan Yoder started the long-range assault and Kylie Horn hit a triple to make it 7-2. Brynn Mullet turned a long rebound into a swish from the corner and Zoe Miller popped from the top of the key for a 15-2 advantage after the first quarter.

"Take away that first quarter and this is a different game," said Garaway coach Dave Shutt. "For three quarters we played back and forth and it was pretty close.

"They scored 46 this time and 67 the first time we played," Shutt added. "I told the kids to hang their hats on this one, because that's where our defense has been the last few games. They really followed the scouting report defensively, and didn't quit, so I was proud of that."

The Hawks held a 25-11 lead at intermission and extended the lead to 18, 39-21, after three, as Kendra Shetler exerted herself inside, while Yoder and Kelsey Swihart struck from deep.

"Kendra Shetler gave us some energy, and Mo (Morgan Yoder) took care of the ball for us," Schabach said.

Schlabach added that Garaway's familiarity with the Hawks was no excuse for his team committing 16 turnovers against no press.

"The 50-50 balls, Garaway went and got," he said. "They played closer to their potential than we did."

Yoder continued to stroke it well from deep, swishing her third triple, to pace the balanced Hiland attack with 13 points. Zoe Miller, Swihart and Shelter each added eight for the winners, who are 10-0 in the Inter-Valley Conference, 15-1 overall.

Garaway scored the final 10 points of the game after Yoder's triple gave Hiland a 46-23 lead midway through the final frame.

Kallie Regula led the Pirates with 16 points, canning a trio of 3-pointers and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. Chelsi Rothacher chipped in nine for Garaway, which slipped to 8-2, 12-6 overall.

"They're a great team. I wish we could play them more often, because they make us better," Shutt added.
