Hawks to play Africentric again for title Saturday

COLUMBUS -- Hiland has won its share of state tournament games, but never like this.

Noelle Yoder scored a career-high 22 points, Karli Mast added 16 and Hiland poured it on late to notch the most lopsided Div. IV state semifinal victory in Ohio history -- 73-42 over Carey at Ohio State's Value City Arena Thursday afternoon.

The Hawks, gunning for a second straight state championship and fourth title in the last five years -- which would make five total in 10 state tournament appearances -- outscored the Blue Devils 34-11 in the game's final 11-minutes plus.

"To me, it was kind of a typical style of game for us," said Hiland coach Dave Schlabach, whose 26-1 team will play Columbus Africentric (22-4) on Saturday in a rematch of last year's title game, which Hiland won for its fourth championship since 2000. "We played OK at times and other times we didn't. ... The stakes are so much higher (Saturday) that we've got to be sharper, a little smarter."

Hilary Weaver, the state's Div. IV Associated Press co-Player of the Year, scored 11 points in just 16 minutes for Hiland. The Hawks, who had 11 players log at least two minutes in the first half, made 27-of-30 free throws and stunningly outrebounded Carey 41-25.

Carey (23-3), playing in its first Final Four, scored the first eight points of the third quarter to trim its deficit to 39-31. But Yoder quieted the rally with back-to-back driving layups -- part of the junior's 13 points in a seven-minute span -- and Hiland outscored Carey 24-5 in the fourth quarter.

"Hiland's Princeton offense has constant cutting, constant motion. And then, when you think they're going to cut, they flare out for a 3," Carey coach Phil Vaughn said. "We didn't want them to get the ball to the basket -- that was our first priority -- but when they're hitting 3s and getting to the foul line ..."

Vaughn stopped with a shake of the head, glancing at the final stats once again. Hiland was 20-of-47 total from the floor, including 6-of-18 from 3-point range. Included was 12-of-27 in the opening half with four 3-pointers, when Hiland turned the game up-tempo at both ends and had seven players score and nine grab rebounds.

Karrah Windau started the game 0-for-5 and had seven turnovers for the day, but led Carey with 15 points. Brooke Distel added seven points and six rebounds for the Blue Devils, who shot 14-of-49 for the game but 0-of-11 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Aside from its dominant closing, Hiland had two key stretches in the opening half.

The Hawks scored on seven straight possessions over the final 3:02 of the first quarter, reeling off the final 11 points. And spearheaded by a pair of Yoder 3-pointers and seven points from Mast, Hiland pushed a 19-12 lead around the five-minute mark of the second out to 34-17 with 1:54 to play in the half.

"I felt good about how we came out, how Hiland made some runs but we stopped them and made some runs ourselves," Vaughn said. "After a while, though, they made the most of their chances and hit some 3s and got to the basket on us. They're a great basketball team who does what they do very well and have been doing it at this level for a while."

And usually, for Hiland at state, that involves a standout performance -- sometimes of the unexpected variety.

Mast's 16 points in a team-high 25 minutes were basically right on average. Yoder, who added six rebounds, three steals and two assists to her 22 points in 24 minutes, doubled her usual per-game offensive output for the season.

"Those are two kids who enjoy the big stage. They relish the opportunity to play in a game like (Thursday's) -- and that's all about confidence," Schlabach said. "Karli was her usual steady self, playing like a senior who has experienced this before. And Noelle got it going as well as she has all season for us.

"We shared the ball well and our depth paid off."

To the tune of Hiland cashing in on the most dominant Div. IV semifinal victory in the 34-year history of the State Girls Basketball Tournament.
