Hiland in a quandry as it rolls in tourney opener

UHRICHSVILLE -- No one in the Claymont High School gym was particularly shocked to see how the opening game of the Div. IV girls basketball sectional played out.

Hiland, the defending state champion ranked second in the latest state poll, dominated Toronto from the opening tip and rolled to an 88-10 win. The Red Devils didn't get a field goal attempt until the second quarter and didn't break into double figures until their final possession of the game.

For Hiland, it was one of those days when everyone walking out of the gym healthy is the good result.

"Basically, this gets us to the next game," Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said. "We had three really good days of practice and that helped us. We knew what to expect coming in. We wanted to get everybody on the floor and contribute and we got that today."

Hiland (20-1) scored the first 27 points of the game before Toronto got on the board with 7:11 left in the second quarter. The Hawks kept up their frantic offensive pace after the first quarter while backing off a full-court press that made it hard for Toronto (2-19) to get the ball over half court.

The type of game this turned out to be put the Hawks in a bit of a quandary. With the postseason in hand, they needed to play the game their way. But, how much to press and how many fastbreak layups the team needed became issues. The dogs were officially called off in the third quarter and the Hawks bearing down on a 70-point lead.

The offensive efficiency brought about 21 assists in 37 baskets and plenty of other scores that came directly off steals. It was a game that easily could have seen the defending state champions score 100 points had that type of score not been a direct violation of the Hiland Way.

"We're not here to embarrass anyone," Schlabach said. "We'll call off the press and stop the fastbreaks. But, we're going to play half-court man-to-man and run our offense."

That offense saw four players hit double figures, led by Noelle Yoder's 18 points, eight steals, four assists and four rebounds. McKenzie Miller had 13 points and eight steals, Katelyn Stuckey had 15 points and Karli Mast added 10. Every player to make the trip and dress for the game got in and only two went scoreless.

As efficient as that was, the Hawks did some things with a look to the future. At the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth, the Hawks had a lineup on the floor that might get a lot of use in the next three weeks. Schlabach had Karli Mast, Hilary Weaver, Yoder, Mykeila Mast and Stuckey on the floor together for the first time all game. That group brings a lot of tournament experience to the floor and could see a lot of time in tight games.

"We hadn't played them together any today and I wanted to get them on the floor together before they came out," Schlabach said. "This game is part of the process. We just needed to stay after it and stay focused and our kids did that today."
