BERLIN — A pair of lower division powerhouses squared off in the season-opener for the Hiland girls Friday at the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center, as Division IV's top-ranked Toledo Christian brought its high-flying Eagles to Berlin for a date with the top team in D-III, Hiland.

Led by the powerful pair of Zoe Miller and Kelsey Swihart, who helped Hiland rule the rebounding roost and also posted double-digit scoring efforts, the Hawks rolled to a 68-37 thrashing of the Eagles.

Miller led all scorers with 27 points, converting a couple 3-point plays as well as a 3-pointer, while hitting 9 of 11 shots from the floor. She also yanked down 15 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.

Swihart swished 2 of 3 shots from beyond the arc en route to 15 points and 12 boards (5 offensive).

Hiland's Kelsey Swihart splits a pair of Toledo Christian defenders during high school girls basketball action on Friday. The Hawks won, 68-37. Kyli Horn also scored in double figures for the winners, canning two triples on her way to 12 points.

Swihart drilled two 3-pointers and Miller and Horn each added one as Hiland opened a 21-7 after the opening stanza and never looked back. The lead was 35-16 at intermission and stretched to 51-29 after three.

"Doing this without Brynn [Mullet], who at times has been our best player, I thought the kids stepped up and did a nice job," Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said. Mullet was resting an injury.

Kyli Horn lets a 3-pointer fly during first-half action Friday against Toledo Christian. The Hawks won, 68-37. "I thought Kyli played really well, and Zoe and Kelsey had double-digits in rebounds," the coach added. "They are going to be our two-headed monster this year that is going to be pretty tough for some teams to defend this year."

Schlabach said he was happy to get a game in after such a long layoff.

"We are just happy to finally get out on the floor and get a chance play," Schlabach said. "There were some sloppy passes and I think we may have tried to overshare a few times, which led to our 18 turnovers.

"Morgan [Yoder] didn't score a whole lot (5 points), but I thought she did a really good job on the kid she covered," Schlabach said.

Madison Royal-Davis is the reigning D-IV Player of the Year and is going to Butler. She finished with 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting, the lone double-digit scorer for the Eagles.

Hiland's Kelsey Swiart drives hard on the baseline against Toledo Christian. The Hawks won, 68-37. "We barely got a full scrimmage in before heading in the season," Toledo Christian coach Tim Wensink said. "We're just glad we could play some basketball. I just wish we could've competed a little harder."

The coach said Tuesday's first game (a loss against another state power Margaretta) was the first time his entire team worked together.

"That was a tough game, and then you come here to take on Berlin Hiland," Wensink said.
