If the Hiland Lady Hawks are looking for some offseason fundraising ideas, they may want to consider starting a glass-cleaning company.

After demolishing Garaway on the boards 49-14 in their prior game, the Lady Hawks faced the Lady Knights of West Holmes on Saturday, Dec. 22 at the Reese Center in Berlin and cleaned up the glass again, this time outrebounding the Lady Knights 60-23 en route to an astounding 75-20 victory.

"I like where our kids are at right now," Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said. "We're not dependent on hitting shots, and we've got our kids playing really hard, and they've bought into the rebounding side of it. Our rebounding has been relentless."

Hiland (7-1) trailed West Holmes (4-3) just once when Charolette Brown knocked down a short jumper to put the Lady Knights up 2-0. Hiland then went on a stunning 25-0 roll to put little doubt as to the outcome. Even though West Holmes played hard throughout, the Lady Hawks were simply too big and too hot from the field to stop.

"We played hard, and there was a lot of heart," West Holmes head coach Lindsy Snyder said. "They want to do well, and we are making improvements."

Snyder added that while Hiland is talented on offense, it is the Lady Hawks defense that makes them go.

"They are a really good defensive team," Snyder said. "Defensively they are pressuring, and they have the ability to contest shots and to keep people in front of them."

The run started with Morgan Yoder's jumper. Then Zoe Miller hit two free throws. Kendra Shetler produced inside, and Yoder picked up a steal for an easy score. Kelsey Swihart swished a 3-pointer, Yoder connected from long range as well, Brynn Mullet found Zoe Miller inside twice and Mullet connected on a corner three-ball to give Hiland a 21-2 lead through the first period.

The Lady Hawks got scores from Kyli Horn and two free throws from Yoder before the run was finally stopped on Katie Sprang's pull-up jumper in the lane.

After Aila Miller scored for Hiland and Sprang hit again inside, the Lady Hawks reeled off another scoring spree, tallying up 19 straight points between the rest of the second quarter and into the third period.

The Lady Hawks' second big run was highlighted by three Mullet 3-pointers that pushed the Hiland lead to 46-6. Scores from West Holmes' Taylor Miller and two Paige Race free throws around a 3-pointer from Hiland's Horn gave Hiland a 52-10 lead through three quarters.

Hiland continued to dominate the glass as the fourth period began. West Holmes got a free throw from Race and a nice drive from Regan Wilcox before Hiland made its third big run in the game, this one being a 13-1 spree that made the score 67-14. Mullet scored five points in the span, and Aila Miller pulled down just about every possible rebound during that span.

While Hiland attacked the boards with a vengeance, freshman Aila Miller was having a season in one game, hauling down eight offensive boards and eight defensive caroms for a grand total of 16 rebounds. All of that was in just 15 minutes of play.

"Wow," Schlabach said when informed of the freshman's numbers, "that's pretty impressive. All of our post kids have just … to be able to throw two in there at a time is something. To think all of those kids can do that for the next few years."

Joining Aila Miller in double-figure rebounding was Shetler, who yanked down 11 boards, while Zoe Miller added eight.

Perhaps most impressive was how Hiland smothered the defensive glass, giving up only one meager offensive rebound, something that pleased Schlabach as much as anything.

"We're still adjusting to Tiff [Weaver] not playing," Schlabach said. "Aila has been by far the most pleasant surprise of the season. She is playing more than I thought she would be at this time. She is in the regular rotation."

Leading all scorers was Mullet, who hammered home five 3-pointers en route to a career-high 21-point evening.

Schlabach said he was proud of the way Mullet responded after having one of her worst games versus Garaway the game prior.

"She didn't shoot it well at Garaway, but she didn't let it bother her," Schlabach said. "She came out confident and ready to go."

Mullet counterpart Morgan Yoder was once again the glue that made the Lady Hawks click. She scored 11 points with six assists and three steals. Schlabach said she understands the game very well.

Aside from Mullet's 21 and Yoder's points, Zoe Miller added 11, Horn pitched in with 10, Swihart scored five, and Shetler and Aila Miller each notched four.

West Holmes got five apiece from Brown and Sprang while Hannah Rohr and Race each contributed three. While it was a struggle to keep pace all night for the Lady Knights, Snyder said the experience will make them better.

"There's a lot to take from this," Snyder said. "We've made progress, and we aren't where we want to be now, but we've made progress. We get three days off for Christmas, and we'll come back and make more progress. Obviously this [level] is where we want to get to. This is good for us because it makes us better. When we go play someone else who doesn't pressure that much, you are that much more comfortable. Our goal is to compete against teams with that kind of pressure and to create good shots against that type of pressure."
