Lady Hawks get 20th straight Sectional crown despite effort

“Terrible. We’re not good at anything right now. We are not fundamental, our passing, our talk, rebounding, defense, we can’t throw it in the ocean; we are as bad right now as we’ve been all season.”

And to think, that comes from Dave Schlabach, whose team blasted Caldwell 65-16 in the second game of the Claymont Div. IV Sectional Thursday night.

If that was how the winning team felt, think about how the Redskins must have been feeling on their trip home.

Victory was not ever in question for Hiland in this one, the Lady Hawks sporting the top seed and a 21-3 mark, versus a 4-18 team which has struggled to score points all season.

But it wasn’t the winning that Schlabach wanted to see in this game, but rather a team which was stepping up and playing solid basketball at the right time.

While Hiland shot 40 percent from the floor, take away the 15 uncontested layups they took, and the Lady Hawks percentage drops to around 27 percent. They were an ugly 5-of-24 from the 3-point arc.

Defensively, they did force Caldwell into 42 turnovers, making for a number of easy shots.

Hiland burst out of the gate early, making a series of easy layups that came off of steals from their full court press. Regina Hochstetler scored 10 of Hiland’s 18 first quarter points, all of which came courtesy of layups or free throws.

Megan Beachy then scored on a put-back and hit a 3-pointer, sandwiching that around a Sasha Goings steal and layup, and the Lady Hawks had built a comfortable 25-6 lead.

No, the victory was never in doubt, but as Hiland easily pulled away.

However, it was not the kind of play that Schlabach wanted to see at this juncture.

One might argue that it is incredibly difficult to get inspired to play the competition the Lady Hawks have played over their past six games, Schlabach said his team needs to find ways to get inspired if they want to get to where they feel this team is capable of getting.

In their next foe, Bridgeport (22-1), Hiland will finally face an opponent which is capable of handing them a loss if they play poorly.

“We’re not fundamental, and when that happens your confidence goes,” said Schlabach. “I am glad that we finally play someone who can beat us if we play like that. If we play like that then we deserve to lose and end our season.”

In the same breath, Schlabach said that the team has been practicing great, but for whatever reason, when they have faced a number of very inferior opponents, they have not played well, despite a rash of easy victories.

“We’re not making the smart basketball play right now,” said Schlabach. “But I know that it can turn on a dime.

“We’re just not a very well coached team right now, and that is disappointing,” said Schlabach.

Hochstetler ended the night with 20 points to lead all scorers, while Beachy added seven, Angela Troyer and Brittany Miller scored six apiece and Goings and Jenica Schrock each scored five.
