NEW PHILADELPHIA — With all of his accolades and awards, Hiland's Dave Schlabach has earned many monikers throughout his illustrious career.

He has been Ohio Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year.

After his team's 47-37 Division IV District title win over Rosecrans on Saturday night at New Philadelphia, he can now be considered something of a fortune teller.

"At the end of the third quarter (with his team down 33-30), in the huddle, I said I think we can hold them scoreless in the fourth quarter," Schlabach said. "And we almost made it happen."

The Hawks allowed buckets by Maddie Chandler and Kloie Johnson to start the fourth frame down 37-30, and from there, starting with a Regina Hochstetler triple at the 5:36 mark, his team went on a 17-0 run to close out the win.

"We like to think that with our depth, our nine may eventually beat your five, and tonight, I think our depth was a key," Schlabach added.

The Hawks (23-3) advance to the regional at Massillon Perry, where they will play Thursday night against Lake Ridge Academy from North Ridgeville.

It was a final five minutes of big plays and big shots by a bevy of Hawk players. After Hochstetler's triple, Jasmine Goings grabbed a rebound off her own missed free throw and stuck it back for a 37-35 deficit, and after a Rosecrans turnover, Hochstetler had a putback for the 37-37 tie.

A Rosecrans miss led to an Emily Yoder bucket, a pair of free throws by Goings, another Yoder layup and four straight free throws by Yoder and Jenica Schrock to end a frenzied Hiland victory.

"We didn't have a prepared finish, and they (Hiland) did," Rosecrans coach Gale Kirkbride said. "We tried not to lose and Hiland went to win. They were much more aggressive at the end, and we kind of went into panic mode."

Hochstetler never went into panic mode, hitting for 27 points in the game on 9-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-10 from long distance, including a buzzer-beating triple to end the third quarter from the Quaker "R," which sits about 28 feet from the Hiland basket.

"When we scouted them (Rosecrans), we said we can't let the game get out of control, and every time the game got out of hand or near out of hand tonight, Regina Hochstetler hit a big 3," Schlabach said. "Unbelievable."

The teams were sloppy at the start, combining to shoot 6-of-23 in the first quarter as the Hawks led 9-7, thanks to nine Hochstetler points.

The Bishops (23-3) came back to lead 21-19 at the half, thanks to eight (11 total) Alexis Kirkbride points that included 3-of-4 from long distance. The Bishops also outrebounded the Hawks 16-12 and had seven offensive boards. Hochstetler had 14 points at half, with Yoder making a key three-point play in the second quarter.

Rosecrans built up a 31-24 lead with 2:13 to go on a Kirkbride bucket, but a Hochstetler triple and her amazing buzzer-beater helped make it a three-point game heading into the decisive fourth frame.

"Finally, I think our schedule is paying off," Schlabach said. "We've seen the big teams like Twinsburg, like Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, like West Holmes, and it helped us tonight.

"I felt like Emily Yoder played a great floor game, and Jasmine played well inside."

Goings finished with six points and a team-high nine boards, while Yoder had nine points. Kirkbride led Rosecrans with 13 (two after halftime), while Molly Nash had nine.
