STRASBURG—Make it 10 wins in a row for the Strasburg High School girls basketball team.

But not one was bigger than Wednesday night.

Hiland brought its No. 3 Division IV state ranking into the Tigers' gym and was stunned by a gritty Strasburg squad, 55-51, in overtime.

The outcome leaves both teams with one loss atop the Inter-Valley Conference standings. Strasburg, whose only loss came to the same Hawks on Nov. 30, now is 11-1 overall while Hiland drops to 8-2.

"I don't remember the last time Strasburg beat Hiland," said a happy Tiger head coach Brenton Bonanno. "We come to practice every day to prepare to play teams like this."

Strasburg held the upper hand in the first half, leading

10-2 midway through the opening quarter and taking a 25-16 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Things changed dramatically in the second half, however.

Hiland's pressure forced numerous Strasburg turnovers as the Hawks pulled within 30-28 entering the final period. The Tigers missed their first seven shots before finally getting on the scoreboard with 2:48 to go in the period.

"We told the girls at halftime that their pressure would happen," noted Bonanno. "We just had to hang on. The Lord was shining down on us tonight."

Strasburg totaled 25 turnovers in the game compared with 23 by the Hawks.

Hiland took its first lead of the night early in the fourth quarter and was ahead 39-35 with 3:26 remaining in regulation. Mikayla Johnson's 3-point basket tied things up at 39 with 2:40 to go, but Hiland went right back in front at 43-39 with 1:31 left.

Nicki Cregan hit a basket and Ariel Jones swished two free throws to even the score at 43 with 1:01 on the clock. Neither team could score in the remaining time, forcing an extra period.

The Tigers scored the first eight points in overtime to lead, 51-43, with 1:51 left. Missed Strasburg free throws allowed Hiland to close the gap to 54-51 with 11 seconds to go. Two more Tiger misses gave Hiland a chance to tie, but the Hawks threw the ball away with 3.2 seconds remaining.

McKenzie Columbo then hit the second of a double-bonus with 1.2 seconds left to wrap up the big victory for the Tigers.

Cregan and Stephanie Schuster each scored 13 points to spark the winners, who were 20 for 45 from the field and 11 of 22 at the foul line. Amanda King added 10 points.

Hiland was led by McKenzie Miller, who tallied 12 points before fouling out early in overtime. Kendra Schlabach scored 11, while Jasmine Goings totaled nine points and nine rebounds.

The Hawks ruled the boards, 36-25. Schuster grabbed six rebounds for the Tigers.
