Grizzlies close gym in style

Fans attending the last girls basketball game at Wadsworth's west gym Saturday night were treated to quite a spectacle and witnessed one of the best quarters of basketball by a team you'll ever see.

There was 8-of-16 shooting, 6-of-9 3-pointers, just two turnovers, high-intensity defense and 22 points all against a state-ranked team. Unfortunately for visting Berlin Hiland, that was as good as it got. The other three quarters, the hometown favorites were just beastly in what wound up a 57-45 Wadsworth victory in a highly entertaining late-season non-league clash of perennial state powers.

"That's the first time since I've been here that we've had that type of non-conference game this late in the season," Grizzlies coach Andrew Booth said. "Fortunately we were able to set it up and we set it up with this kind of game in mind. I feel very fortunate we were able to play in that game. It kind of was like a tournament game."

Truth be told, as good as the Hawks' second quarter was, the one turned in by the Grizzlies in the third was even better. In that period Wadsworth made 8-of-13 shots and held the Hawks to five points. The Grizzlies got every rebound in the quarter, converting two into baskets, meaning they scored on 10-of-13 possessions.

Rebounding was a huge difference overall as Wadsworth held a 31-15 edge.

"We matched up better after that," Booth said. "We did a better job taking care of the ball and matching up with their shooters better." The Hawks (11-8) provided Wadsworth with just what it needed at the end of a month-long stretch of Suburban League blowouts. The last time the Grizzlies (16-3) played a team that could push them was Jan. 16 against Toledo Notre Dame at the Classic in the Country - at Hiland. The next time will be no sooner than the Medina District championship game in three weeks.

In other words, minus Hiland, the Grizzlies would be in the midst of nearly two months of games they could win in their sleep. "We all played at a higher level than we usually do," said Wadsworth senior Kara Long, who finished with a game-high 19 points. "We play Suburban League games, and we're not just going through the motions, but here we know we know we have to execute if we're going to win. It's awesome to be pushed. They pressure and they're physical and we have to build from that."

Long made 7-of-11 shots, including 4-of-7 3-pointers. She had four rebounds and an assist

"She played like a senior leader should at the end of their senior year," Booth said. "On the boards, defensively, not just shooting, that was probably her best all-around game that she's had in her career."

Junior Rachel Goddard played what has become a typical game for her. She scored 12 points and passed for four assists and made the Grizzlies' offense run smoothly against Hiland's pressure defense.

Senior Jessie Gearhart added nine points, four rebounds and a pair of assists. Junior McKenzie O'Brien came off the bench to score five points and grab six rebounds.

Regina Hochstetler led Hiland with 18 points, nine in the second quarter. McKenzie Miller added 12. Hiland finished 8-of-19 from behind the 3-point line.

The game was the last a girls team will play in the West Gym, which will be torn down following the school year. "It's sad," Long said. "A lot of people say, you don't get to play in the next gym.' I kind of take it as, I'm honored to be able to play in this gym where Cassie Schrock, Jen Uhl, and (Katelyn) Vujas all played. It's awesome to say I played in the same place they did and finished it out."
