NEWCOMERSTOWN—Hiland overcame a slow start, where the Hawks missed their first five field goal tries and turned the ball over once, falling behind 5-1 in an Inter-Valley Conference clash Wednesday night.

But the Hawks turned up the defensive pressure and forced six Trojan turnovers and four misses over the next 10 possessions and the Hawks got their offense rolling in a 70-32 thumping of the Trojans in Newcomerstown.

"Our pressure has to pay dividends for us because we can't seem to score in our half-court offense," Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said. "If we're not scoring right now off our pressure, we're not scoring. We need to bring that on a nightly basis."

Regan Miller and Regina Hochstetler struck for a pair of driving layups and McKenzie Miller buried a triple and Hochstetler stuck back a missed free throw to ignite a 15-1 Hiland run, to close the first quarter up 16-6.

And the visitors never looked back.

Meagan Hall hit a pair of 3-pointers and nine different players scored by the break. Eleven different players scored in all, led By Regina Hochstetler and Jasmine Goings with 10 points apiece.

"Jasmine is starting to come along. She got herself to the free throw line. Meagan Hall is playing to her potential right now. She's knocking down shots," Schlabach said. "We've just got to get someone else to join her."

Hall finished with nine points on three 3-pointers.

Hiland's trapping defense forced a number of Newcomerstown turnovers in the second stanza as the Hawks built a 36-14 halftime advantage en route to win No. 6 without a loss. The Trojans dip to 2-5, 2-4 in the IVC.

"The frustrating thing is, we've got kids who have worked really hard who are good scorers, and they're not producing right now," Schlabach said. "We're waiting on them to get rolling."

McKenzie Miller finished with nine points and Bria Coil and Regan Miller added eight.

Hall hit from downtown again and Jenica Schrock joined the point parade as the visitors built a 51-18 lead after three. Allie Hinton's second 3-pointer of the game stopped a 10-0 Hiland run. Hinton led all scorers with 20.

Things could've been much worse, but the Hawks clanked 10-of-27 from the free throw line.

Hiland has a two-week break before taking on Wooster on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

"If we don't play better than any game we've played so far this year, we'll get manhandled," Schlabach said. "We've got our six non-league games and Garaway, Strasburg and Ridgewood. We feel we've got nine quality games left, and that's good."
