Hawks upend No. 8 Bishops in Double OT

The Daily Record

For Hiland, the 2011-12 season has been a tough one where the ball hasn't always seemed to bounce its way, but on Wednesday that all changed. With a flick of the wrist from senior McKenzie Miller and a big break, the Hawks will look to continue their traditional long postseason run with a shocking win over No. 8-ranked Bishop Rosecrans.

"This year we have had so many close games against tough teams," said Hiland coach Dave Schlabach. "We just haven't been able to win that big game, until tonight. We got it at the right time and in a big moment for us."

That couldn't have been more correctly said as the Hawks were left in limbo when a Bishops player beat them to a missed free throw and tossed a stickback up at the glass. In what may have seemed an eternity later, the ball rolled around the rim only to fall harmlessly to the floor as the buzzer sounded at the end of the second overtime.

Still, this contest wouldn't have even come down to the final "hold-your-breath" moment had it not been for Miller, who put forth arguably one of her biggest efforts to date. With 8 seconds left in regulation and Hiland trailing by 28-25, Miller calmly buried a 3-pointer to send this game into overtime and finished with a team-high 17-point, 13-rebound effort to lead the locals.

"McKenzie really stepped up for us tonight," said Schlabach. "Offensively we struggled, but defensively we were able to get some big stops."

Regina Hochstetler also played strong or the Hawks (14-8) with seven points, Regan Miller grabbed four steals and a trio of girls pulled down five boards in Emily Yoder, Kendra Schlabach and Regan Miller.

"With Bishop Rosecrans and Garaway in our district, we have the best Div. IV district in the state," said Schlabach. "We are starting to relax a little and if we continue to win a few more games, we will really get our confidence up."
