Familiar territory for Hiland girls

BERLIN, OH -- The Hiland girls feel they have some unfinished business.

Last season, the Hawks were on their way to a fifth Division IV state basketball championship before Columbus Africentric pulled off a big second-half comeback that stunned the Berlin bunch.

Hiland is back in the Final Four and has designs on completing a championship run.

But before the state-ranked Hawks (24-2) can get to the title game Saturday, they will face Minster (18-7) Friday in the Division IV state semifinals.

Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.

The Hawks, ranked No .2 in the state, will be making their 11th appearance at the state tournament and will be vying for their fifth championship.

They will be going to the Final Four for the ninth time under Coach Dave Schlabach (420-59 in 19 seasons).

Returning to Columbus has been a big goal after what transpired in last season’s title tilt.

"That stung really hard for our seniors and they're really excited about getting back there," said Schlabach.

"We know we have a heck of a challenge Friday," added Schlabach. "I told (veteran Minster coach) Nann (Stechschulte) if there is one coach I prefer not to coach against it would be her. We have a tremendous amount of respect for her and her program. Her kids are tough and so fundamental."

Minster, located in west central Ohio near Wapakoneta, has also had success at Columbus, having won state titles in 1998 and in 2004.

Ironically, Minster recorded a 48-43 win over Hiland in the state semifinals en route to the 2004 state title.

Schlabach said his senior group is a special one.

"All groups work hard, but this one has been a special group," said Schlabach of his senior bunch.

"They've been highly committed and they've sacrificed a lot. Finishing anywhere but Columbus would have been a big disappointment."

Hiland is coming off a 43-22 victory over Cuyahoga Heights in the regional championship game at Perry last Saturday night.

Senior post player Katelyn Stuckey powered in 14 points as the Hawks pounded the ball in the paint.

Noelle Yoder, a senior shooting guard, leads the team in scoring at 18 points per game and Hilary Weaver, a senior point guard, adds 15. Stuckey and sophomore guard McKenzie Miller are both just over eight points per contest and senior guard Jessica Stutzman rounds out the starting five at six points per outing.

Hiland scores 69 points per game and allows just 34.

Minster defeated Mount Blanchard Riverdale 51-41 to get to the Final Four.

Junior Delanie Wolf (5-10 forward) leads the Wildcats at 10.4 points per game. She had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the win over Riverdale.

Junior Erica Fullencamp (5-11 forward) averages 8.8 points per game, but suffered a sprained ankle in the regional semifinal and her status for Friday is up in the air.

Sophomore center Tara Clune (6-2) averages six points per game, while senior guard Sarah Huelsman (5-4) and junior guard Maria Dahlinghaus (5-6) each add five points per game as starters.

Minster scores 45 points per game and gives up 39.

"We expect a well-disciplined, fundamental team," assessed Stechschulte about the Hawks. "They are fundamentally sound in everything they do. They have great guards and they shoot the ball well. I just have a lot of respect for their program and what they do."

The winner will face either third-ranked Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (24-1) or Fort Loramie (22-4) in the state title game Saturday at 5:15.
