GNADENHUTTEN, OH -- Any coaches looking to scout Hiland’s fourth-quarter offense went home empty-handed Tuesday night.

The Hawks put their offense in the closet in the fourth quarter ... and STILL beat Beallsville 56-36 in the girls' Division IV district semifinal at Indian Valley.

Hiland led 54-24 after three quarters and scored two points at the line in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we played with a lot of intensity in the first half," said Hiland coach Dave Schlabach. "We got a little sloppy in the fourth quarter, but we played hard."

Hiland (21-2) returns Friday night for the district championship game, where it will face the winner of tonight's game between Shadyside and Strasburg.

The Hawks won handily on this night, and they did it with balance.

Hilary Weaver led the team with 12 points. Noelle Yoder finished with 11 and Regan Miller 10.

Three different players — Jessica Stutzman, Meagan Hall and Missy Mast — had five points each.

Tori Jarrett, who made just 4 of 21 shots from the floor, had 10 points for the Blue Devils, as did Rebecca Garlick.

With Beallsville packed into a zone, Hiland spent much of the first quarter shooting from the outside.

Beallsville’s last lead was at 7-5 when Jarrett made a 3-pointer midway through the first quarter.

The Blue Devils were still close at 11-9 when Julie Bilyeu scored on an offensive rebound.

Then the Hawks turned up the intensity.

And it got ugly in a hurry.

Hiland scored seven unanswered points off turnovers to open an 18-9 lead after one quarter and the Hawks dominated from there.

Any of the five players on the court at any time showed the ability to penetrate and Hiland had a 20-point lead at 37-17 by halftime.

Just when it looked like it couldn't get any worse for the Blue Devils ... it did.

McKenzie Miller opened the third quarter with a bucket that sparked a 12-2 run as Hiland really opened it up.

The Hawks led by 32 at one point in the quarter and ended the frame with a 30-point cushion at 54-24.

"We played a good program tonight," Schlabach said. "Coach (Terry) Jarrett runs a good program."

The Blue Devils played to the end and scored enough in the fourth quarter to cut the final margin to 20 points.

"I thought we played better in the second half," said Jarrett, whose team finished with a record of 16-7. "They're an upper-class team. They've got great coaching, they're fundamentally sound and they've shown that they can knock it down from all over the court."

Hiland ruled the rebounding war as well, winning that 44-28.

McKenzie Miller led with nine boards, while Yoder and Ashley Weaver had six each.
