Hiland's Dave Schlabach is one of a record-setting eight high school basketball coaches selected Thursday to lead the boys' and girls' basketball squads at the 2010 McDonald's All-American Games to be held March 31 at Value City Arena in Columbus.
Schlabach has a 396-57 won-loss record with four Division IV state titles and four additional Final Four appearances in his 19 seasons as girls' basketball coach at Hiland. He received the National Federation Coach of the Year Award in 2009.
Schlabach and Scott Rogers of Indian Hill High in Cincinnati will guide the East girls' team, while Cathy Self-Morgan of Duncanville (Texas) and Dorena Bingham of Alaska will coach the West girls' team.
Dru Joyce II of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Norm Persin of Oak Hill will serve as co-coaches of the East boys' team. Eric Flannery of Lakewood St. Edward and Carl Kremer of Cincinnati Moeller will head the West boys' squad.
The four sets of co-head coaches combine for nearly 3,000 career wins and almost 150 years of coaching experience.
Proceeds from the games will benefit families and children in need through Ronald McDonald Houses Charities of Central Ohio.
There are two girls on the 12-player East roster from Ohio: Samarie Walker from Dayton Chaminade-Julienne, who is headed to Connecticut, and Natasha Howard from Toledo Waite, who will attend Florida State.
The girls' game will begin at 5:30 and will be broadcast on ESPNU, with the boys' game to follow at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
