Weaver joins idol Launa Hochstetler in record books

Hilary Weaver has always looked up to Hiland great Launa Hochstetler.

So it's only fitting that she join her idol in the Lady Hawks' record books.

With five assists during Hiland's 57-52 overtime win over Lutheran East in the Division IV regional semifinal on March 12, Weaver surpassed Hochstetler as the program's all-time assist leader with 589.

Hochstetler ended her career in 2005 with 587, including a record 199 her senior year.

Weaver will likely break that senior record, as well, as the Lehigh University recruit sits at 195 headed into this week's Division IV state tournament at Ohio State's Value City Arena.

"Launa is an unbelievable player," said Weaver, a 5-foot-7 point guard. "She is a complete player. And I'm glad I have her to look up to."

The comparisons between the two run deeper. Weaver shares the same unrelenting motivation that propelled Hochstetler to a state title during her senior season, a sensational career at Valparaiso and a professional basketball career overseas.

While always wanting to be her own player, Weaver said Hochstetler served as a great inspiration.

"Having her as an example helps," the Hiland star said. "Going against her in open gyms was great."

"All of the girls ahead of me - motivated me," said the Division IV Associated Press Eastern District Player of the Year. "But when it comes down to it, I set my goals and I'm motivate myself to accomplish them."

Hochstetler leads Weaver in career points scored with 1,285 to 1,050.
