Lady Hawks breeze by Saints

Although his options were limited at the time, Hiland coach Dave Schlabach now knows the downside of a wardrobe change.

After wearing a white button down on the sideline throughout his entire 19-year coaching career, Schlabach, who came to his Lady Hawks' game last Wednesday at Central Catholic directly from a funeral, switched gears to a spiffy navy shirt.

"In honor of Jim Jaberg, one of our biggest fans, I wore the blue shirt," Schlabach said.

And while the Lady Hawks didn't play great, all the wardrobe changes in the world might not have changed the outcome. Playing without some of its stars last Wednesday, Hiland was plagued with turnovers and poor foul shooting but rode a sweet start to a easy 69-29 win over Tuscarawas Central Catholic in Inter-Valley Conference action at New Philadelphia.

A lingering MCL injury sidelined Bowling Green recruit Noelle Yoder, while Jessica Stutzman, who plays with Compartment syndrome, was given the night off.

Hiland - which improved to 13-1, 11-0 IVC - made one foul shot in seven tries in the first half and shot 50 percent (13 of 26) for the game. Couple that with 19 turnovers and a handful of defensive breakdowns, and the Lady Hawks looked like a shell of the team that played in the Division IV state title game a year ago.

"That was as poor of a game as we've played all year," Schlabach said. "Nineteen turnovers. Missed free throws. We gave up a lot of penetration in the halfcourt. My really good teams in the past have been able to play in bad games and still perform well.

"And this group is having a tough time doing that... To this point they haven't been able to play in a game like this and play well. They settle."

Lehigh University signee Hilary Weaver scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first, including three 3-pointers to help ignite a 24-2 quarter.

The Lady Hawks had a bit of a letdown in the second quarter after a sensational first, outscoring Central Catholic 10-8. Hiland still had a comfy 34-10 lead at halftime.

"The first quarter went well, but we weren't able to sustain anything after that," Schlabach said. "We only had 10 points in the second quarter."

Hiland's McKenzie Miller played perhaps one of her best all-around games of the season, scoring 11 points with 12 rebounds and three steals. The 5-foot-9 sophomore was 3 of 3 shooting from long range.

Meagan Hall added 10 points and Arrianna Shrock had nine and five rebounds for Hiland, which expanded its lead to 46-12 in the third following a quick 9-0 run.

Hiland shot 45 percent (23 of 51) from the floor and made an astounding 56 percent (10 of 18) from 3-point range.

Defensively, Hiland limited Central Catholic to 28 percent (13 of 45) shooting from the field and 33 percent (2 of 6) from the 3. The Saints made just one trip to the foul line, going 1 of 2.

Millie Patchan had nine points with 13 rebounds and Becky Russell kicked in nine points for the Saints (3-11, 2-9).
