Area hoop team makes New Year's resolutions

Well, it's officially 2010.

And with a new year upon us, it's also the time when people make their annual list of New Year's resolutions.  Whether it's to lose weight, eat better, save money, advance their career or take a trip, people see the end of one year and the beginning of a new as the perfect opportunity to make commitments for self betterment.

I made a few myself:  finally sent in my astronaut application form, learn to play the recorder, season everything with Gummi Bears and reduce my carbon footprint by inventing a vehicle that runs on carrots (this one may be tricky since I know nothing about mechanical engineering, biochemistry or metallurgy).

While it's human nature to continually strive for self improvement sports teams are no different.

So when asked about New Year's resolutions, here is what Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said about his team.

After a convincing 48-29 win over rival West Holmes to end 2008, Hiland moves into 2010 with a 7-0, 6-0 record.

By outscoring their opponents 73.7 - 28.9 so far, the Lady Hawks have been dominant at both ends of the floor.

Senior shooting guard Noelle Yoder -- committed to Bowling Green -- is leading three players in double figures with 20.6 ppg.  Hilary Weaver (Lehigh University) has 13.7 ppg with 9.4 apg and Katelyn Stuckey (Ohio Dominican University) has 12.0 ppg with 5.7 rpg.

The glaring resolution for Hiland, coach Dave Schlabach said, is underclassmen scoring.

"We have the same wishes that we had when we started the summer off, and that's to continue to get our underclassmen to contribute more," Schlabach said.  "Our daily concern is trying to become a deeper team... For us to reach our potential, our underclassmen have to continue to increase their contributions."

Another key resolution, Schlabach added, is a successful showing at Classic in the Country VII, slated for Jan. 16-18.

At the CitC, the Lady Hawks are in for quite the challenge.  Hiland will face Potter's House Academy, Fla -- the 2008-09 NCSAA National Champions and ranked No. 10 in USA Today's Super 25 Poll -- on Jan 16 at 8:30 pm before matching-up against the athletic Mason Comets on Jan. 18 at 8:30.

"For us, we feel that weekend will really say a lot about where we're at as a program," Schlabach said. "... We understand that we're going to need to beat an athletic team like [Potter's House and Mason] in order to get to Columbus.  A good showing at the Classic would be just what the doctor ordered for us."
