When you hold your opponent to one bucket a quarter for the first two periods and put on a long-distance shooting display like the Lady Hawks did on Saturday, Dec. 12, against the visiting Saints of Tuscarawas Central Catholic, it is no wonder the point differential was 71.

But the real news was the record-setting performance by Hiland point guard Hilary Weaver, who matched former Lady Hawk Julie Weaver's 21 assists in the Lady Hawks' 86-15 thumping of TCC.

Weaver came into Saturday's game leading Hiland in scoring.  She left with only five points but tied the state record for assists, as she doled out 21 in the romp over TCC.

"It was a pretty unselfish performance," Hiland coach Dave Schlabach said.  "It's kind of neat that we've got two Hiland kids tied for the all-time assist record in the state.

"They're both extremely good quality point guards," Schlabach continued.  "Hilary didn't have a turnover the first two games of the year.  She's been really productive handling the basketball.  You've got to have kids hit shots for you in order to get 21 assists.  It was neat for her to get that record."

And the kids did hit the shots for Hiland.

Sophomore guard McKenzie Miller buried three triples, classmate Meagan Hall busted a pair and senior sharpshooter Noelle Yoder connected four times from beyond the arc as the Lady Hawks went 11-for-20 from 3-point range.

The Saints, meanwhile were six-for-25 from the field overall, turning the ball over 29 times.

Schlabach liked the way his younger players stepped up and shot with confidence.

"We didn't get that from them in our second game.  That's one thing we were more pleased about on Saturday.  Our younger kids have to look to be more aggressive constantly.  That's a key for us," Schlabach said.  "We've been disappointed in that regards up to Saturday.  It's a decision they're going to have to make.  Even if they're not confident yet, they're going to need to portray that confidence."

Yoder finished with 22 points to pace the Hiland attack.  McKenzie Miller finished with 17 and Hall and Katelyn Stuckey chipped in with 11 points apiece.

Jessica Stutzman just missed double figures with nine points, hitting her one 3-point attempt.

Hilary Weaver scored five, Ashley Weaver added four points and Regan Miller scored three.  Kendra Schlabach and Hannah Stoneman rounded out the Hiland attack with two points.

Hiland jumped out to a 15-0 lead before the Saints scored their first points.  It was 25-2 at the end of the first quarter, and 49-5 at the half.

The Lady Hawks made good on 35 of 51 shots from the field overall, and also drained five-of-six free throws in running their record to 3-0
