BERLIN -- A 400th win is a big deal for a coach -- but Hiland girls basketball coach Dave Schlabach was relatively nonchalant about his milestone after his team's 63-17 Inter-Valley Conference victory over visiting Strasburg Wednesday night.
When asked about his 400-57 record leading the Hawks, the 19-year veteran said he is more likely to "remember the 50-some losses," and could likely recall "those scores and where they were played."
Granted, Schlabach and Co. are used to winning. As Schlabach remembers, Hiland has only lost one league game in the past 12 years and has brought home four state titles since he became coach in 1991.
The 400th victory is also a Hiland basketball milestone, as Schlabach is the first coach to hit the marker for the Hawks.
"A 400th win means I am getting old and have been through lots of years of coaching," Schlabach said. "But it also goes back to the kids, and the program we have. The kids work real hard an d there are guys and ladies who work with us who have made my job real easy."
It wasn't as easy as Schlabach would have liked it to be Wednesday night, though, as the Hawks only led Strasburg by four points at the end of the first quarter.
But Hiland (4-0, 4-0 IVC) came alive at the beginning of the second, with 12 unanswered points, including an impressive offensive rebound on her own missed jumper and layup from sophomore McKenzie Miller (9 points, 6 rebounds).
The Hawks would go into the locker room with a commanding 25-6 lead, and would come back into action with senior Noelle Yoder making noise with four of her 13 points and two of her five steals coming in the third quarter.
Aside from Yoder and Miller, 5-foot-10 post Katelyn Stuckey was a force for the Hawks. Her inside game (14 points, 7 rebounds) was especially crucial to Hiland's victory, as the Hawks found themselves cold from long-distance range.
The usually perimeter-dominating team only made 2-of-15 from behind the arc.
"I would say this win was ugly," Schlabach said. "There were a lot of whistles blown, and we couldn't get into our normal rhythm. but Katelyn and Jess (Stutzman) kept us in the game tonight. Katelyn boarded well and Jess has that 'Bull-in-a-China-shop' factor out there."
Stutzman added six points and four rebounds to the winning effort, while point guard Hilary Weaver dished out a double-double and was two rebounds shy of a triple-double (10 assists, 11 points, 8 rebounds).
For Strasburg (3-2), Santana Bonifant led the scoring effort with five points, while Erin Metzger brought down six rebounds.
"We have a better team than what we showed out there tonight," said Strasburg coach Chad Bonifant. "We hung with them in the first quarter, but then the wheels fell off."
